Arnica Flower Reviews

Arnica is a genus of perennial, herbaceous plants in the sunflower family that is native to sub-alpine regions of western North America but can also be found in arctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. Arnica is also known by the names leopard’s bane and wolfs bane. The flowers of the plant are used in medicine. Arnica plants have a deep-rooted, erect stem that is usually unbranched. Their downy opposite leaves are borne towards the apex of the stem. They show large yellow or orange flowers, 6–8 cm (2–3 in) wide with 10–15 cm (4–6 in) long ray florets and numerous disc florets. Several species of Arnica, mostly notably A. montana, contain an anti-inflammatory compound believed to relieve pain, aches, and bruising when applied topically.

Chemical Constitution of Arnica Flower

The main chemical composition of Arnica is thymol, carotenoid, etc. The sesquiterpene lactone contained in Arnica chinensis can prevent the rupture of lysosomal membrane. So it can reduce swelling and eliminate red blood.

Health Benefits of Arnica Flower Extract

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, also named as “wear-and-tear” arthritis, is usually treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Homeopaths have long suggested that arnica, with its anti-inflammatory properties, offers a reasonable and safe natural alternative to NSAIDs.

In a comprehensive review of studies published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, researchers from Australia analyzed seven previously published trials examining the benefits of topical herbal remedies in people with osteoarthritis.

Of the remedies studied, arnica gel appeared to work nearly as well as Advil (ibuprofen) in reducing pain and improving joint function in people with hand osteoarthritis.

Post-Surgical Pain and Bruising

Arnica is commonly used to treat bruises and swelling after surgery, especially during cosmetic surgery. Although scientific research is inconclusive on the matter, topical creams and gels containing arnica are said to help with pain and bruising of the skin. A 2016 review of studies in the American Journal of Therapeutics suggested that it was a “valid alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in treating post-operative pain, edema (swelling), and ecchymosis (bruising) but acceded that the results varied substantially by the formulation, dose, and study.

Reduce Inflammation

Arnica is as a soothing agent for inflammation. In case you have sports injuries or strains from exercise, apply some of the Arnica extract or gel directly on the source of the pain, it can work wonders. You can quickly see reduced swelling, due to the organic anti-inflammatory compounds of the plant, and you should soon feel a loosening of the muscles around the affected area. Arnica is one of the most often used herbs by athletes.

Analgesic Ability

The anti-inflammatory ability is one side of the coin, but there is also the issue of pain relief. Pharmaceutical like ibuprofen only cover inflammation, often leaving pain present, but Arnica naturally works as an analgesic as well, to relieve topical pain all over the body. However, do not apply Arnica on an open wound, as it does have high-potency compounds that should not be inside the body.

Promote Hair Health

If you want to fortify your hair follicles and prevent hair loss, then add Arnica extract to your soaps and shampoos. The rich nutrients bind to the hair and keep it looking younger for longer. In some cases, Arnica can even encourage the growth of new hair, adding to your volume and youth.

Arnica Flower Side effects

Arnica is known to cause side effects even when used in highly diluted topical preparations. More serious side effects can occur when taken by mouth. Arnica may cause a mild allergic reaction and also trigger transient increases in blood pressure and heart rate, particularly if used excessively or on broken skin.
